Dr. Vinay Koparkar- The Scientific Expertise

Chairman & Chief Mentor

A proud pioneer of the concepts of bringing medical knowledge to the hair and beauty business and setting up a men’s parlour in India, Dr. Vinay Koparkar is the scientific expertise and technical experience behind Papillon Chemocare.

Dr Vinay Koparkar started his medical practice in 1986 and he realised that it was difficult and not very profitable to practice medicine ethically, at least for the first 5-6 years. Moreover, practicing medicine with regular clinic hours was no more than a half-day job. So to utilise his medical knowledge, talent and energy, entrepreneurial potential and to be able to supplement his limited income from an ethical medical practice, he started exploring avenues of business. With a passion to use his medical knowledge, he decided to do something in the field of beauty with a focus on men as he realised there was a tremendous need and scope in men’s grooming. To be able to give his clients the best experience, he studied cosmetology by sourcing books from the U.S. in 1987. Since a men’s parlour needed to have hair-related services, he himself took training from international institutes Morris Master Class (London) and Toni & Guy (Singapore) in hair-cutting and hair-dressing. And so in 1988, he set up India’s first men’s parlour, the Papillon Men’s Beauty Salon.
Apart from the men’s beauty parlour, Dr. Koparkar also brought many innovative concepts to the field of hair and skin and the Papillon brand grew by leaps and bounds. He started the Papillon Institute of Cosmetology in 1994 to provide scientific training to those who want to enter the field of beauty. He also established the Papillon Hair and Face Clinic in 1996 which was the first-of-its-kind clinic exclusively for hair and face problems. He is also behind the idea of the Papillon Hair and Makeup Studio which was established, scaled up and is being led by Kavita Koparkar who is also Papillon Chemocare’s Creative Head.
Dr. Koparkar is also the founder and scientific expert of Papillon Wigs and Weaves and Papillon Chemocare. The idea came to him when he was exploring the field of hair loss to see whether there are any needs that are not being met. He realised through his research that one of the most important causes of hair loss is chemotherapy. He began talking to his network of oncologists and he realised that there is a great need for quality wigs for cancer patients. He decided to become involved in meeting this need and Papillon Chemocare was established.
Dr Koparkar brings to Papillon Chemocare his scientific expertise in the field of hair, training in advanced wig fixing and styling and years of customer experience. While he has passed on the reins of moulding the vision and strategy to Aniket Koparkar, the CEO & Chief Strategist of Papillon Chemocare, his values of passion, enthusiasm and innovative thinking lie at the core of it.

Aniket Koparkar: The Business Expertise

CEO & Chief Strategist

Aniket Koparkar’s career trajectory has taken many paths, all of which have led to becoming the Co-Founder and CEO of Papillon Wigs and Weaves and of Papillon Chemocare. His career began as a sportsperson playing professionally for almost 13 years for the Indian national table tennis team. Having given all he could to the sport, Aniket quit at the young age of 23 years to set up Papillon Wigs and Weaves.

To make a success of it, Aniket decided to build his business expertise and did his MBA from the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad- one of the premier business schools in the world. After his MBA, Aniket worked with the Investment Banking Team of Deutsche Bank in Mumbai and then for a year in Frankfurt, Germany to get some work experience before starting his own venture.
Aniket’s role in Papillon ChemoCare as the Co-Founder and CEO covers “pretty much everything on the non-technical side of the business” as he describes it. Even though it is a generational takeover of a family business, Dr. Vinay Koparkar (along with our styling expert Kavita Koparkar) has offered only his scientific and technical expertise to the designing of Papillon Chemocare products. When it comes to running the business, he has passed on the baton to Aniket who solely looks after the growth and expansion strategies of the business. His MBA training brings a new perspective to the running of the family business, and he has been instrumental in moulding and implementing the vision and strategy for Papillon Wigs and Weaves and Papillon ChemoCare.
On being asked about his vision for Papillon ChemoCare, he says he wants it to become a household name such that whenever people talk about hair loss from chemotherapy in India, they talk about Papillon Chemocare. Moreover, he wants to partner with cancer-care hospitals across India to make Papillon Chemocare a part of the services that they offer to cancer patients. His experience with cancer patients has shown that they consider using a wig as an essential part of the process of chemotherapy treatments. However, doctors and cancer-care hospitals are more focussed on the medical treatment aspect of it and it becomes difficult to find the right expert to talk to about wigs. So he wants Papillon Chemocare as a brand that pioneers the attitude change of seeing wigs as cosmetic service for cancer patients and wants to make them be available as a part of the services offered by cancer-care hospitals to cancer patients. In the long run, Aniket also sees Papillon Chemocare channeling Papillon’s expertise and experience in hair and skin to come up with more product offerings that meet the specific needs of cancer patients such as a line of skincare products that are focussed on the skin issues that cancer patients have.
Aniket believes that there are three main things that set Papillon Chemocare apart. Firstly, Papillon Chemocare brings to you ready-to-wear wigs along with video tutorials right at your doorstep, so that cancer patients will be able to easily buy and wear wigs from the comfort of their home without having to go looking for a stylist for any help. Secondly, Papillon Chemocare brings wigs that are styled keeping in mind the Indian customer. In international markets, wigs are all about stylish looks with different hair colours and cuts, whereas Indian cancer patients look for simplicity and a natural look in their wigs. Papillon Chemocare brings these kind of wig styles in quality material for the Indian cancer patient’s need. Also our 4-step guided buying process, our wigs, our resources such as video tutorials on wearing, styling and taking care of your wig and our blog have been meticulously designed to bring the customer service experience of our offline center to the cancer patient’s home. As Aniket says, “It would have been easy for us to just list our products online and start selling them, but we wanted to make sure that our customers feel comfortable buying and wearing the wig, so we took the time to design the process and the tutorials to bring a slice of the center’s customer experience to our online customers”.

Kavita Koparkar-The Styling Expertise

Technical Director & Creative Head

Kavita Koparkar, a brand by herself in the field of beauty and hair, is Papillon Chemocare’s technical director & creative head. Papillon’s wigs have been designed based on her expertise in hair styling, colouring and care and her experience with thousands of Indian women of all age groups as a beauty and hair expert.

The turning point in her life was at 17 when she attended the basic training course in makeup by Vikram Gaikwad the leading makeup designer of Hindi film industry. It was then she knew that she wanted to be in the beauty industry for life. Determined to establish herself in the field, she chose the path less travelled and did a course at Hollywood’s Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles. Being the first Indian to receive training at this internationally renowned school was just another feather in her cap.
Kavita has done both commercial work for ads, music videos, films, photoshoots and fashion shows and set up her own makeup studio for bridal makeup. But she realised her creative appetite and business aptitude were better utilised as an independent entrepreneur than as member of a commercial crew. So she focussed her energies on establishing herself as an expert in bridal makeup.
The story of building her expertise in beauty did not just end with her technical training in makeup. As a makeup artiste she felt she needed to also know about hair too, specifically, hair styling, treatments and cutting. She believed in getting trained from the best so she initially got trained from Dr. Vinay Koparkar, her father and the man behind the 28 plus year old Papillon Salon brand. She then went ahead and did another international course in hair dressing, cutting and styling from Toni &Guy, Singapore. Armed with her expertise and experience, Kavita has set up the Kavita Koparkar Studio, a one-of-its kind concept studio for bridal makeup and hair. She now also offers courses and workshops in beauty at the Kavita Koparkar Academy.
Kavita has been closely involved in the designing of Papillon’s wigs. She has her fingers on the pulse of the hairstyles, colour, cuts, length and texture that Indian women have. This has been translated with her technical knowledge into wigs that would suit the Indian look. As she says her vision for Papillon Chemocare is, “We want to ensure that our expertise reaches a national base through our website so that when people shop for wigs from their home they do so happily without being depressed or anxious. And they won’t be disappointed when they open the package that comes home and they see the wig they have bought.” The Co-Founder and CEO of Papillon Chemocare Aniket Koparkar brings the business expertise that makes this vision a reality.
